Mid-Week Reminder

What a great weekend we had! My word of thanks to Doris Adkisson, Mary Frey, and Hazel Rudick for hosting the wonderful reception for Kay Chadick retiring from the District Office after 20 years. So many of you attended. Thank You, Thank You.

Our church council also approved of us going forward firming up the price for the construction of the new building. While it is higher then we had planned, it is still very doable. We will be having a church conference on February 12th. Stay tune for a separate notice on this.

We have also been blessed, we now have about 55 families and individuals that have made a three year commitment to the Building Fund. Plus many more have made generous gifts. If you have not made your pledge yet, please prayerfully consider joining us in The Master's Plan.

Other debt of gratitude we owe is to the large number of men who turned out to help us trench and hook up electricity for our Flagpole Project. Thanks a bunch! It certainly makes me so proud to be the pastor of such a generous church.

Dear Covenant Family

Have I told you today that I loved being the Pastor at Covenant? Just a quick update, The Master's Plan: we now have 40 pledges made totalling almost $400,000. Plus, we already have money people have given for the new building program. We will still be able to receive pledges for these second mile giving (over and above what you are now giving to the work of the Lord here at Covenant) for next few Sundays. Thank you for responding so well to our need.

We will be receiving bids this coming Friday, so hopefully by Sunday, we can tell everyone how we are standing as far as awarding a contract. I am both excited and nervous.

But, we will still have church this week.

The Land of Opportunity - 2012

January 2012 is unseen territory and provides opportunities; or at least that is the way I am approaching our future. Instead of anticipating more of the same, and while I struggle with being a realistic pessimist: I am choosing a new attitude for 2012. It is and shall be a blank slate on which the Lord and we can do great things.

We have finally gotten the plans completed and are now securing bids for the phase one of our capital improvements; the construction of our multi-purpose building and office complex. By mid January, we should know what it will cost and then we will vote on the construction and financing. During December and January, we will have the opportunities to hear about our capital campaign, as we seek second-mile giving and pledges toward the expansion. We will also be developing plans for the renovation of our current Sanctuary soon after the construction of a new building. We will also have the opportunity to establish an endowment program for the future maintenance and preservation of our facilities. Look forward to learning how we will grow and expand our facilities with your help during 2012.

In January, we will be birthing additional opportunities for study. During Wednesday night, Ardie Sudduth and I will team-teach a section on Death, Dying, and Issues with Aging. Then in February, I will teach several weeks on “Faith Sharing”, helping us all learn how we can share our Christian beliefs as Jesus asked us to. On Sunday mornings, Les Stratton will begin another Adult Class, and we are hoping some of our younger married couples will gather for study and fellowship. If you are not attending any of our small groups to grow in the knowledge of God's Word, commit to doing so in 2012.

There will be opportunities as we find new and exciting ministries to our community. We have several ways to GET FIT, and will be looking for other opportunities to not only learn about taking care of our Bodies and Souls, but other ways to exercise and take better care of these bodies as the Temple of the Holy Spirit. We have partnered with Lourdes Community Health Foundation to provide material, seminars, and health screening during 2012.

Staffing for the continued ministries in youth and children will provide us other opportunities. With the sudden death of Gretchen Cheshire, we have asked Sherry Hester and Becca Wharton to assume that leadership with our youth, and they are doing great job. We also have experienced the resignation of Kim Goodman from our Children's Ministries, so we will soon be examining our needs and making plans for our future growth. There are opportunities for many more to be involved in these ministries during 2012.

New for 2012, I am being lead to spend a little time in evaluating our church ministry, and will be issuing my own “State of the Union of Covenant Church” letter by the end of January. I believe that as the senior pastor, I need to catch a new vision for where the Lord may be leading this wonderful congregation in 2012 and beyond, and then I can identify how best as your pastor to help. My prayer is that it will be the start of new conversations and new dreams. So here we are, looking towards the new year, and I just can't wait to see what the Lord will do in us, with us, and through us. Pray that we be in tune with Jesus.

"O God, Our help in ages past, our hope for years to come." I can't say it any better than Isaac Watts, but here we stand ready to jump into a Brand New Year with Brand New Opportunities, knowing that the Lord has seen us through, and will walk with us through the future.

Get Fit for 2012
While this week between Christmas and New Years is kind of slow, still be thinking ahead.

This Thursday Evening our Zumba class will be meeting and once again on Monday January 2. What a way to end the year and start a new one, but being committed to getting active.

Weight Wise and Pilates will resume next week as well.

Start 2012 with the Lord in His Worship
This Coming Sunday, January 1, 2012, we are back on our regular schedule with the First Worship Services of the year. We will participate in a time of Renewing Our Covenant with the LORD and with His Church. In my message we will look back at the history of Covenant, as we prepare to look forward to our building program. There is so much good news to report over the next few weeks.

Start 2012 with Study
Wednesday January 4th, our Wednesday Night Dinners will resume along with our Academy.
Class #1 - Financial Peace University, a 13 week class helping set priorities in your stewardship of God's resources, if you have not yet registered online, call the church office and Rev. Byron to get the information needed.
Class #2 - Dr. Ardith Sudduth and I will teach during January sessions on death, dying, aging issues, etc. Each week stands alone, but come hear about our spiritual understanding of the circle of life.

Starting 2012 by Serving
Finally, but certainly not least, beginning in the New Year, Melissa Bowen will be helping me with our Children's Ministry. The Lord has convicted her of our need for serving as the Director of Children's Ministries for our church. She brings to this position, a love of the Lord, a love of the church, and her many gifts for planning, organizing, and serving. She has agreed to do this for a while, giving us the opportunity to take our time in seeking someone else.

The Children's Ministry is looking for a few good men, and women! If you feel a calling to work with the future of Church of the Covenant, please contact Melissa Bowen to discover the ways you can make a Christian difference. Melis811@aol.com or 254.1505. Thank you!

I want to end 2011 with thanks. Thanks to and for all of the volunteers in all of the music ensembles. Thanks to and for the worship leaders. Thanks to and for the instrumentalists. Thanks to and for our wonderful pastoral leadership. Thanks to and for all the church members and attendees that have supported the music ministry. Thanks to and for all the wonderful friends and strangers that stepped up to support me during (what I hope is) the most difficult time of my life. Thanks to and for wonderful in-laws that give me family where I once had none. I want to give thanks for all of these things.

But, that doesn't change all of the other emotions that I'm experiencing at the same time. I also want to focus on all the others in our church and community that are going through the holiday season in grief. Like me, the grieving may be recent. Other have been dealing with their loss much longer. In the same breath that I lift up my thanks I also lift up all of us who are struggling this Christmas. I ask you to please do the same. God DOES answer prayers. Please, send them out and send them often.

And finally, I pray that God blesses all of our families with the best possible Christmas ever.

Tomorrow, Christmas Day, one service only - 10:00am. Parents let your children bring a small quiet gift to be a part of the Blessing of the Toys. You will still have plenty of time to get home and have your Christmas Dinner.

And may the Peace of Christ find a home in your heart this busy Christmas Season. After all, Christmas is about God coming to us in our greatest need. HE offered Himself for our Salvation and our Wholeness.

December Youth News

I would first like to welcome Becca Wharton to Hwy. 4:12, our youth program. She is a UL student that will be helping to build our Jr. High group. She is already hard at work with great ideas and lots of energy. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful young woman.

Hwy. 4:12 (Jr. and Sr. High youth group) and CYAG (Covenant Young Adults Group) have been really busy making wreaths to raise money for Acquire the Fire. We would like to thank everyone for buying wreaths and supporting our efforts. We have several activities planned for December and January. On Sunday, December 4th, we will be going to Build-A-Bear for our annual trip to make bears for the Lafayette Police Department.

We will also have our youth Christmas Party at Jennifer Blanchard's home that evening. (Remember to bring a wrapped white elephant!) On December 18th we will sort the Angel Tree gifts immediately following the 11:00 service. After the youth meeting, we will go grocery shopping for the Angel Tree. If you have never joined us, please try and do so, you don't know what you are missing.

On Monday, December 19th, the young adults will have their Christmas party and yes, you also need to bring a wrapped white elephant. We have not finalized the plans yet, but we will go out to eat at a local restaurant. In January, instead of the same old "lock in", we will do something new. We will have a "lock out". If you want to learn more about a "lock out", then come join us at youth on Sunday afternoons, 3:30-5:30, for a great afternoon of fellowship, study, and food. I hope to see you there.

Changing of the Year - Happenings & Hope

Mind boggling and life changing. Since our last newsletter went to print, we have had several happenings to deal with. We lost two staff persons here at Covenant, as well as say goodbye to another of our young moms (Jan Knight Begnaud) who also died. Gretchen Cheshire, our beloved director of youth and young adults died on October 16th. We still are mystified and will carry the hurt of this loss to us individually and to our congregation, and we need to continue to surround Ken and Gretchen's family with this loss.

The next happening to our staff, was the resignation of Kim Goodman, which I accepted effective Friday November 18. We are so happy that Kim and Don married, but I certainly didn't realize her life change would effect our congregation so much. She and Don feel she needs to be full time married, so I reluctantly accepted her resignation.

Happening number three—hopefully by the time this newsletter is delivered to your house, we will have a completed bid package for our planned multi-purpose building. We are so excited. It has taken way too long, but know that when we get bids, we will have few if any change orders. Mike DeHart and the committee did not know they were signing up for a multi-year commitment. Sometimes in January, we will get the final price and inform the congregation as we get a final approval. But let me tell you, we are so ready. We already have outstanding pledges toward the buildings from several of our key leaders of $285,000 plus have already received some $270,000 towards the building. PRAISE THE LORD! Each of our households shall soon be receiving a brochure that talks about the Master's Plan and it has information along with a commitment sheet for you to return. We hope many of you will be able to return those to the church office, hand them to me or Mike DeHart or to Jeanne Boniol during December. Wouldn't it be great to see how we could fund this building by extra mile giving and funds already in hand, and not have to borrow too much. This is my hope!

Christmas is a season of hope! Unlike the kinds of hope found in only the right circumstances and the “stars all lining up” found in the world, the Bible emphasizes a hope that is eternal. We have hope because of the possibility of our future resurrection along with Jesus, hope in the knowledge of the unconditional love of God as evidenced in Jesus Christ and His Grace. Even when we must face the death of a loved one, we had all hoped they would get better. Our Christian faith says they did get better, and now are forever healed by God's grace. We can hope that things can get better in this world, but even if they do not....we still will live our life in the fullness of God's Kingdom here in our lives and the Kingdom of God to come. Have Hope this Christmas season....

Another powerful Sunday full of music. At 9:00am and 11:00am, Redeemed will present their Christmas Music along with the Bells Angels ringing Christmas Music. Then at around 10:15 our sanctuary will be filled with children and the Christmas Pageant with shepherds, angels, Wise Men, baby Jesus and Mary and Joseph. Come see the old old story only the way our children can do it.

Angel Tree Gifts due this Sunday. We need volunteers who would be willing to help grocery shop Sunday evening to meet at the Walmart on Pinhook at 6:00pm. See Kathy Lewis for more information on Sunday morning.

Our Staff Parish Relations committee is also receiving extra financial gifts to be divided between the staff for Christmas Gift. Mark your check or put in an envelope so designated. This will be the last Sunday for this gift.

Sunday 2:00pm - 4:00pm - the Sudie Lewis Circle is sponsoring a Gift Wrapping Party. Bring your Angel Tree Gifts and the paper and bows and tape will be provided. Great fellowship time to do something that can be mundane and of course, snacks will be provided.

Speaking of Angel Tree - I understand there are still 40 angels that need to be adopted. Sign up Sunday, run out and purchase a gift and then head back up to the church for the wrapping party.

Gifts were given so we could have our very own flag and thanks to all the men and women who helped us raise the poles. The unfurling of the flag and raising the flag occurs at 11:11am on 11/11/2011. The poles are situated at the northeast corner of our property. Refreshments will follow.

Sunday Afternoon
Help us Feed the Homeless from 3:00-5:00pm at the parking lot of First Methodist Church (corner of Johnston and Main). Bring food to help us feed our community. Great fun and fellowship. Covenant has always had the largest contingency of any church and I know we will again.

Childrens' Ministries & Preschool Update

It's been a full month of Pumpkin Patch activities for many of our children. Hats off to those who have been there to assist their parents when they were working and to those who have shared with others about the Patch.

We offer several opportunities for children to be a part of the activities in our church. There's Club 456, MPKids, Wednesday night activities and Sunday school. Be sure you bring your child so that they can reap the benefit of the wisdom of these leaders who work so hard to prepare for them to learn more about our Lord.

Congratulations to one of our families...the Nugents have a new baby girl and Jay is a proud new brother. Many thanks to Mrs. Leigh and Mr. Jerry for all they do to assist with our Children's Ministries.

The children in our Preschool have thoroughly enjoyed the Pumpkin Patch. There have been comments every single day from numerous children about "all those punkins." They've had great fun, so thanks to you Covenant Pumpkin Patch Volunteers, for all the effort you put forth each year to provide all this fun!

We are moving into Thanksgiving, where we'll by dying shirts with fruit and tea leaves and setting up teepees and wearing Pilgrim hats and collars. We believe in teaching the children early about their heritage as Americans.

We also believe in teaching them the importance of Christmas. Many of our children are active in church with their families, and most know the Christmas story, but there are some who do not. How fortunate that we have the opportunity to witness to these families and it shows up most at Christmas.

Just want to give you a heads up for the spring semester on Wednesday nights. We will be offering, beginning Wednesday night January 4, the “Financial Freedom” series by Dave Ramsey. Dave and Diane Redfearn will be the facilitators. This will be a 12 to 14 week study.

If you are interested, please call me or the office so we can begin the registration for our church. Not sure of the cost but we will get the information out as soon as possible. Of course we will offer a regular Bible study as well. Our adult Sunday school continues to grow. Les Stratton will be leading a new class at the beginning of the year. On our web site www.covenantum.org, under “Adult Studies”, you can find all of the classes offered and what each class is currently studying.

The Fred Factor

I was given a book a few years ago, with the above title, with a foreword by John C. Maxwell, a Christian pastor/leadership trainer/motivational type of guy. I was intrigued by the subtitle which merely said: “How passion in your work and life can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.” I thought that was certainly kind of spiritual if not scriptural, without sounding so religious to chase people away.

After a long-long month of October, in which we have had over 7000 students not counting parents, teachers, chaperones here at Covenant for pumpkin Patch field trips; and five full weekends full of great fun events where we played host to other thousands of guest to our campus, I needed to remind myself of some of the “Fred Factors” in life. After all, we have had lots of ordinary people doing ordinary type work, but we certainly expect extraordinary results.

Principle #1 - Everyone makes a difference - our Lord and our church, in fact our world needs people who know we can change the world, one person at a time. It seems as if part of being a disciple for Jesus Christ is one who is committed to making a Christian difference in someone's life.

Principle # 2 -Success is built on relationships – we can't make much of a difference in the lives of people that we don't have a relationship with or don't care about. Well, we might make a difference, but it certainly wouldn't be the difference Jesus would want us to. Take time to get to know people as you invite them to spend time with you, your church, and your Lord.

Principle # 3 - Continually Create Value for Others- In order to make a difference in others lives, we must be determined to add to their lives, not to distract or take away from them. Are you able to either add good stuff to their lives, take away bad stuff from their lives, or are you simply dumping bad stuff upon them?

Principle # 4 - Reinvent Yourself Regularly – be committed to growing spiritually and growing as a disciple, so that you will have more of yourself (or Jesus) to give away to others. If you are the same person you were when you first gave yourself to Jesus, then you may either be in a rut or a grave and neither are great places for us to live.

Covenant and Our Lord needs us to ponder these principles and to recommit ourselves at being the best disciples possible. We will be building a new facility, and hopefully within the month of November, we will get bids and finalize our financial plans, but we are to be about more than building buildings; we are to make disciples. I am more then committed to lead us to be a church where People Meet Jesus, Hear the Message of Jesus, and then live out our Mission for Jesus. That is when we might need some of the Fred Factor Principles to live out. Find your place among us as we live out our faith.

Pumpkins are Coming!

We will also have Zumba classes on this Thursday for our other Get Fit Group.

Saturday, the Preschool will be cooking for this Pumpkin Patch and its Family Fun Day. Invite Invite Invite - prizes and games for the little ones.
Followed by Sunday, the Angel Tree group will be grilling.

Crying Shame we don't have anything to do around here.

Children's Ministry Update - October 1, 2011

One of the regular events we offer for children is on Wednesday nights. We've revamped it this year and are offering a time of Bible study, craft fun, thought-provoking games, and some great music. (Father Abraham is wearing the adults out!) If you have children in grades K-6, make sure they join us for a great time on Wednesday nights beginning at 6:30 (parents are welcome to bring their children in about 6:15 so they can participate in Communion). Many thanks to Ms. Amanda Arceneaux for leading the Bible study portion and to Ms. Kathy Lewis for leading music. Mr. Sam Ball is also there to help and is always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. We had 7 children the first night, 9 the second night...come on, let's beat the odds and shoot for 15 next time!

I also want to express thanks to Robin Stokes for taking over the coordination of Children's Worship. Susie Blanchard has done a great job and we appreciate all her dedication. Also coming in to help with Children's Worship is Sherry Goudeau, Emily Goudeau, and Diana Seiler. It takes a team to put this together every week and we have a great one!

I know we have an exciting month coming up with our pumpkin patch tours and the many activities on the weekends. But, I just wanted to let you know that we will still have the Wednesday night suppers and Bible studies. Bro. Chris is leading the study in Revelations and Kody and Melissa Bowen, Mac and Donna Guidry are leading the “Marriage Enrichment” class. The “F U E L” class on nutrition will only be meeting on October 18th this month.

Check in the bulletin or the mid-week email from Pastor Chris to find out when the “Healthy Living and Exercise” class will be offered, as we are still trying to find the best day and time for the class.

Also check bulletin to see date and time for our Zumba class.

Don’t miss our mid-month Solace on October 19th. Dale White will be leading the devotional so I know we will be blessed. On October 26th a three week study on Ruth and Esther will begin.

Showers of Blessing

In an old gospel hymn, Daniel Whittle shared these words:

“There shall be showers of blessing: this is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing, sent from the Savior above.

There shall be showers of blessing, if we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing, if we let God have His way.”

I want us to focus on those showers of blessing, that the Lord continues to send our way. Our worship service continues to grow as we gather to celebrate the Goodness of God and lifting our hearts and hands in praise. Our music teams; the choir, Redeemed, and soon our Handbell choir will bless us. Just this past week, a group of women, knocked our socks off by offering their gift to the Lord and to our congregation. Our music team of Ken, Pat, Jennifer, Lisa and all the many volunteers—thank you for showering us with blessings, sent from the Savior above.

By the time you receive this note, our front yard will have been converted into our annual Pumpkin Patch. A place where thousands of children can gather to hear and see and experience in fun and creative ways, a great field trip. A place where families can gather for a free hayride, pumpkin looking, photo opportunities, fun jumps, and great hospitality offered by our Covenant folks. This outreach would not take place without the leadership of the Mason Family, and the great number of volunteers who offer their time to be a blessing to others, sent from the Savior above.

Our Christian Education program continues to grow, whether it is our children, our youth, or our adults. Each week we have opportunities for Bible Study, great fellowship, educational programs on marriage, Get Fit, or a variety of topics. Jump into one of these small groups and be blessed as we are committed to not only Hear the Message of Jesus, but to do the mission of Jesus. Some of the missions we have been able to help because of your generosity, has been additional gifts to UCO Food Pantry feeding people in our city; extra special gifts to the Louisiana Children's Home to help provide care for the foster children in their care. Thank you for being a blessing to them, a blessing sent from the Savior above.

Finally, I want to mention our Building Program. It has taken much longer then anyone expected to design and plan for all the details of the building we need. It is very apparent that our committee cares about what we do, and we want to make certain that we don't miss the opportunity to offer the best building we can to our congregation. As we write this, we have already received over $400,000 in pledges and in cash. Because we are wanting to minimize any interest expense to our budget, we will need others to help fund this dream. Should you wish to discuss with me the possibility of giving a gift even before we ask the congregation, I will be happy to be showered by your blessing.

Why not just stop, bow your head, and praise God for His showers of blessing upon us all.

The Patch is alive and well. We have already hosted over 1,100 children for field trips and are looking forward to another 6,000.

This is the first weekend I and wanted you to know what is going on:

Saturday: The Methodist Men are cooking hot dogs and hamburgers. Come out and eat and help us raise the flag. Flagpole that is. They are committed to put up a great focal point celebrating our beloved nation and honoring all those of our Covenant Famiily that served our nation.

Sunday: Butch Lewis will be cooking to help raise funds for the Angel Tree program. Food will be available right after Sunday School to take home or stay and eat outside and enjoy the sights.

Remember each weekend day, we have fun jumps and hay rides and the Youth Hwy 412 group is doing the concession stands, roasted peanuts, popcorn, and lots of fun. I need as many of you as possible to come out on the weekends, wearing your Covenant shirts etc. to help us greet all the people who come to visit with us.

We still need volunteers. Especially in the afternoons in our sales trailers. Please sign up in the foyer or just come out and be put to work.

Sunday is also World Communion Sunday. We will join millions of Christians around His Table celebrating what He has done for us. Bring your family and invite friends to join us for this sacred moment.

Our next Pumpkin Truck is coming October 6th at Noon. Pass the word and help us pass the Pumpkins. It may look like we have lots but we hope this weekend our guest will be bringing them home.

First - a GREAT BIG THANKS to all our Pumpkin Truck Unloaders. Done in record time and our front yard looks great. Again, thanks to all who helped us out. If you missed, don't pout, there will be other trucks to unload.

But, what we need now is a few folks who can help us out during the Field Trips by reading a book to the kids. We have one a day, but most days we need two people who can read a story to the kids on the trips. If you can, call the office or Joyce Henson at 984-6440.

Pumpkin Patch
If you haven't seen our front yard, it has been almost prepared to receive our first truck of Pumpkins on Sunday. If you are looking for something to do on Friday morning, come on down, and help finish our preparations. But don't forget, wear your pumpkin unloading clothes to church on Sunday in this case it is not having to wear our best, it is doing our best for the Lord. We will begin unloading after the last service. We need your help!

Speaking of help, we do need your help throughout the week and on the weekend. Come sign up on the sign in the foyer, or talk to one of the Masons or me. Or just show up during the patch or field trips and we will use your willingness.

Last but not least on Sunday, after two "heavy" and "difficult" messages about 9/11 and our foundations and our need to Love our Enemy, I will be covering the Parables of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, and lost Sons, from the vantage of there will be a party in Heaven. It's Party Time. See you there.

Jimmy Duhon's father died. Mr. Curly's viewing at Maurice Delhomme Funeral Home on Thursday from 11:00am - 9:00pm, and the Funeral Service at 10:00am on Friday in Maurice.

This Sunday, 9/18 - I will continue the message about our nation and what it may mean for us to build our nation's foundation on Jesus Christ the Rock. My message is about the Power of Forgiveness.

Last but not least, Saturday 8:00am - Men's Breakfast, again we will have the opportunity to do a few manly projects around the facility. Come if you can, all tools will be provided. Some inside work and a little outside work.

Covenant Family Update or You Don't Want to Miss...

I hope you had a great Labor Day break - but now we are back in the normal routine for Fall.

Wednesday begins with exercise with Annette and Pilates class at 8:00am in our Fellowship Hall followed by a morning mid-week Bible Study - long term with the explorers Bible Study just now getting started. Come on out and see if this is for you.

Wednesday Night Schedule
Come On Ring Those Bells - our Handbell Choir is beginning rehearsals on Wednesday evening at 5:00pm, time enough to eat afterwards, anyway, no experience is necessary. Why not come out and see if this is one way You can serve Your Lord and Our Church by helping lead in Handbell music.

Great home cooked meal by the Timm's and Verna. We'll begin eating around 5:30pm. Always room for you.

Our Wednesday Night Academy begin
6:20pm - we have a short prayer and Holy Communion Service
6:30pm - Married Happily Ever After? - Enrollment is closed, but if you signed up this will be the first meeting.
6:30pm - Intro to Revelation - Brother Chris will begin a short six week study looking at this Book of the Bible that is often ignored.

We did have another option available, but our Get Fit Class lead by Joe Tidwell can not begin until the next wednesday. We will have several options available about exercise, cooking, physical therapy. etc for you to come and drop in and learn more about getting fit. This Wednesday schedule will supplement our new FUEL Class that will begin the next Tuesday evening at 5:30pm.

Don't Forget this Sunday 9/11, we will have a special service of Remembrance. I will be speaking about What Is It We Build Our Lives on - Sand or The Rock.

Sunday morning at our 9:00am service we will be dedicating our Music Ministry Teams. Be present to pray for those volunteers who help lead us in music during our Worship Services.

Dear Covenant Family - I missed you, even if you didn't miss me. Susie and I thoroughly enjoyed our days apart and our trip to Branson, Missouri. Felt so young being there with all those other older adults who frequent the place. We shopped enough to count as a stimulus program, and we saw great entertainment, and we sat in the back of worship at Branson United Methodist Church, thinking all along I wish I was back at Covenant.

We are now home and can't wait to see you this Sunday at worship, yes, even if it is raining, our roof doesn't leak and we need to be here.

Weekend reminders
We are sad to announce one of our newer members, Mr. Travis Shipp died, and we will have a funeral service at Delhommes Funeral home on Bertrand Drive. Saturday, visitation from 10:00am - 1:00pm, and the service at 1:00pm. If at all possible, come pay your last respects to this kind humble man who was only with us for a couple of years.

Sunday Morning
First Sunday of the Month. We will gather at the Lord's Table for Holy Communion. Don't forget to bring our UCO ICAN food offering. Our Youth group will be informing us of a month long food drive to help UCO with friendly competition between the Sunday school Classes, but bring what you can this Sunday. Parable of the Week - Matthew 25:1-12 - the Ten Maidens with Lamps

Future Opportunities
Next Wednesday, September 7th - we will begin our regular Wednesday Night Dinner and Academy Classes - covering marriage relationships, Introduction to Revelations, and Get Fit.

Handbells are beginning also on Sepember 7th - Lisa White, the leader has informed me that we need to recruit some ringers. No experience or musical ability needed. Why not come try it out and see if you could offer this gift back to God during worship.

Finally, but not least of all, Wednesday Morning the Explorers Bible Study is beginning. If you are looking for a long term interdenominational Bible study, come join this group of women on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am.

Mission Possible Kidsheld its first meeting Sunday, August 14—the day before school started, and a whopping 19 kids showed up to help sort seeds for Pumpkin Patch!We'd like to welcome our newest agents: Jay Nugent, William Perry, Aleya Duhon, Vance and KainArmstrong, Lillian and Celeste Blanchard, and Javien and Destini Thiboeaux. Thank you for joining our "agency."

Helping our newest agents were our "seasoned" agents: Cameron Chadick, Rhett Kibbe, EmilyLeBlanc, Ava and Ashlyn LeFeuve, Kate Manuel, Presley Nutter, Morgan Stokes, and Joseph Vildibill. Agents did an excellent job in their first mission of the school year.

Special thanks to our honorary agent, Steve Mason, for speaking to the group about the purposeof Pumpkin Patch. Also thanks to our adult agents, Myra Duhon, Susan LeBlanc, Christy Chadick, Jennifer Blanchard, and Janice Vildibill for helping out. I'd like to include a personal thanks to our agent-in-waiting, Kaitlyn Kibbe, for working extra hard to help us too.

From the Youth Director - September 1, 2011

On August 21, 2011, HWY 4:12 kicked of the 2011-2012 school year with a Luau/Pool party with all of the members of the youth group plus some new comers as well. We were pleased to welcome Rebecca Whooten into our group. Ms. Rebecca is a UL college student and comes to us from 1st Methodist in Baton Rouge and will be helping to get our Jr. high school group started. We were very excited to welcome her and all of our new members and hope that our youth group can grow over the next school year with Ms. Rebecca’s help. The Luau was a most wonderful kick-off party and we all loved being able to be in a relaxed setting to get to know one another a little better. We hope that we were able to show how we interact with other in a Christians in a safe environment and maybe give the parents of the Jr. High class peace of mind to know that the Lord is on our mind so that we can prosper and comfort each other.

On September 12th, 2011 the college/young adult group is meeting to discuss where we would like to take our group. This meeting will consist of what mission projects we would feel most productive, and also where HWY 4:12 is going as a whole. The college age/young adult group will still be meeting with the younger Jr. High and High School groups, for the time being, but strictly as mentors. We would lead discussions and activities and will strive to be great Christian role models for the younger youth of the church. Once our Jr. High group is established, we will begin having fellowship time with all the youth, then break off so that the Jr. High students can have the opportunity to have one-on-one time with Ms. Rebecca and have their own discussions about topics relative to their age group.

This upcoming school year holds so much promise and all of the youth is excited to see where we are going, and excited to grow for Gods glory. We hope to convey our intentions of living out Gods love, hope, and being able to live in our world as young adults, and Jr. High. With Gods guidance we are expecting great things of the 2011-2012 school year!!

When I sat down to write the article for this newsletter, I looked up at the book shelves and saw a picture of my three children when they were ages 5, 3, and 1. The frame holding the picture says “sweet memories.” As I reflected back over the years, it truly did bring to mind the years of joy, love, and laughter we had and still have growing together as a family. Sure, Martha and I have had our share of disappointment, pain, and frustration but I mostly remember the happier times. I also thought of how Jesus has walked with us all these years, sharing in our ups and downs and upholding us with His powerful hand. I pray that you take some time and reflect on how Jesus’ sanctifying grace has sustained you through all of your life’s experiences. In Hebrews 13:8 it says that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” (NIV)

He truly loves each of us with an unending love.

What Can We Depend On?

As I write this article the third week of August, the symbolic and real gauge of our nation's economy, the Dow Jones is headed south once more. It may only represent the emotion of our national economy, but it certainly reflects the mood of investors. No one can deny we have been on shaky ground, with a prolonged period of unemployment, record high debt for our nation, and now the news of a world wide crisis. If we only look at that news, then we would certainly be nervous. Will our savings allow us to educate our children, provide for a comfortable retirement income, or whatever our goals have been? Returns on savings accounts have been so low, it loses ground with inflation, and now with other investments so uncertain, where do we turn?

My frustration level has also been raised by the ineptness of our politicians to help lead the nation out of our troubles. Party loyalty seems to run so high, that we have to look hard and fast for true statesmanship. Where are those men and women who love nation above party and above self aggrandizement? It is easy to see why the polls reflect a higher level of dissatisfaction then satisfaction with all our leaders. Where do we turn?

The psalmist said it best: “ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though the waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.....Be still and know that I AM GOD!”

As we come ever so close to securing bids and raising funds for our long awaited building campaign, I must tell you I am nervous. Will the environment of shaky finances and political unrest with our times, adversely affect our ability to fund the project? It will, if we keep our eyes on anything but the Lord's promises for His people. That part of me that walks in the world, and listens to the news is nervous, yet there is that part of me, that walks with the Lord, and I know that once again, He can do for us, what we can not do for ourselves. Let me tell you how God has whispered very clearly to me the same message—be still and know that I AM GOD. Even before we have officially asked or announced our campaign, we have been blessed with people's generosity and have pledges and cash in hand approximately $300,000 already. Praise God! Plus, our church is in the best financial position ever. We do have other funds that we have accumulated, that can be used in the building program. Others who know what a pessimist-realist I can be, assure me, God is in control.

So what can we do now? Surround yourself with assurances that our Lord has always been faithful and has always seen His people through perilous times. How might you do that? Be in worship as often as possible. Find a Bible Study and Sunday School class to attend and learn God's word. Fellowship with other believers often. Develop your own devotion and prayer time. Remind yourself all we have comes from and is to be used for God's purposes. Be in discussion now, and in prayer now, about what financial gift you will be able to make to Covenant to help our vision come true. Be still and know that I AM GOD!”

Tomorrow, Wednesday, is our final Solace Service for the summer. At 5:15pm we will have a light dinner and then move into the Sanctuary for the service at 6:15 for music, communion and a brief devotion by Brother Bernie Shamp. Come, join us in fellowship and worship.

Saturday, Men's Breakfast
All men are invited to join us this Saturday morning for our monthly Men's Breakfast. Beginning at 8:00am, we'll eat, fellowship a little, and then we have a few indoor projects around the church to complete. Like we need a reason to use tools.

Mandatory Acolyte Training Saturday
Also this Saturday at 9:00am, we'll have our annual Acolyte training session. This session is MANDATORY to ALL Acolytes, new and returning. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Manuel.

Pilates Resume Tomorrow Morning
Tomorrow, Wednesday, morning at 8:00am the Pilates class will return to their regular weekly schedule. There is room for everyone, so come, join them.

Sunday School Promotion......Yea!
This Sunday all kids move move up to their new Sunday School classes. Come a little early so you can find out where to go.

We offer Sunday School classes from Toddlers to Adults - something for Every Age. All beginning at 10:10 Sunday mornings.

Music Scholarship Recipients Announced

I am glad to announce the music scholarship recipients for the 2011-2012 school year.

Chase LaBure returns to the drums in the praise band, Redeemed. Chase, from Destrehan, Louisiana, is studying Music Media at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

We are pleased to welcome Auriel Campbell, soprano, to the Chancel Choir. You may remember Auriel from our 9:00am service several months ago where she played flute as part of one of our choir anthems. She is a senior at Lafayette High School and has studied voice privately with both Karen Melancon and Shawn Roy.

I know you are going to enjoy the contribution that these two wonderful musicians will add to our worship experiences. Let us all give thanks to God.

We want to take a moment and recognize one of our own, Jim Sides, on this wonderful occasion. Jim, we love you and are proud of you.

Texas Tech 2011 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

James Sides

From Double T Association:

Comprising the 2011 Hall of Fame class are softball player Sandy Butler, men's basketball player Richard Little, baseball player Shane Wright, and football players Larry Gilbert, Brad Hastings and Jim Sides.

The Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Friday, Oct. 7, starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Banquet Hall. The new honorees will also be recognized prior to the football game the next day. Banquet tickets are $50 each and $500 for a reserved table of eight. Contact the Double T Association at (806) 771-4000 for tickets.

Sides was a three-time All-Border Conference fullback between 1953 and 1955. He was twice named Honorable Mention All-America and still holds the school‟s career record with 6.2 yards per carry. Of note, he lost only 3 yards in his career and never lost a fumble. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played professionally in Canada. He resides in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Butler was the only Red Raider named to the Big 12 "10th anniversary team" in 2006. Four times she received All-Big 12 honors – three times being named to the 1st Team and once to the 2nd Team. She was named 2nd Team All-American in 1998 and NFCA All-Midwest Region Team in‟98 and „01. Butler resides in California.

Little was twice named 1st team All-SWC at guard. He led the Red Raiders to the 1973 SWC championship and was described by Gerald Myers as "one of the most complete guards to ever play at Texas Tech" and "an outstanding offensive and defensive guard". Little resides in Abilene.

Wright was one of the outstanding pitchers in Red Raider history. Named 1st Team All-American in 1998 by Collegiate Baseball, ABCA and NCBWA, his 14 wins that year remains the highest single-season wins total in school history. In addition, he set records for innings pitched and complete games. He followed his stellar ‟98 campaign with 3rd Team All-American honors in ‟99. Twice named to the All-Big 12 regular season and All-Tournament teams, he is the school‟s career record-holder in games started, wins, complete games and innings pitched. He resides in Minneapolis.

Gilbert highlighted his career with 2nd Team All-American honors in 1966 while leading the SWC in receiving. He was also Consensus 1st team All-SWC that year and later 2nd team All-SWC in 1967. He left Tech second on the school single-season and career receptions and yardage lists. His 12 receptions and 159 yards against Florida State in „66 were both school records which stood for 35 and 17 years, respectively. Gilbert resides in Dallas.

Hastings was a three-time All-SWC performer at linebacker and earned 3rd team All-American honors in 1986. An outstanding run-stopper, he held the school record for single-season tackles from 1985 until 2002. He also led the team in tackles in 1984 and 1986. He left Tech the career leader in tackles and remains #2 on the list. Hastings passed away in 2009.

The six will bring the number to 163 people who have been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame/Hall of Honor since its inception in 1961.

First Sunday is this Sunday, so we really will have Holy Communion.

I know most of you got a good chuckle at my mistake last week. It wasn't my first and sure won't be my last. But this coming Sunday, I have been assured is really the first Sunday of the month, which means Holy Communion and I CAN Food offering.

Marie Smith who delivers our offering to UCO, said it was a God Send. More people then ever are needing help, so Praise Be to God that one of our ways our church provides ministry is the offering of a few can goods and staple items to help out others. So come prepared this First Sunday to offer again if all possible with this vital ministry.

Our Preschool Ministries is currently looking for a 2 year-old teacher. If you love them and have had some experience working with young children, whether volunteer or paid, please prayerfully consider becoming a part of our preschool team. This is a 5-day a week position where you can help children learn and while doing so, play all day long! For additional information or for any questions you may have, please call Kim Havard at 988-3962 or 278-2340.

Pray for Our Congress, our President and for our Nation.

Preschool Update

We are already nearing the end of our summer session. It’s hard to believe that it has passed so quickly. We’re looking forward to fun jumps and ice cream the last week of school. Our fall session will be starting on August 22. We are getting our classrooms ready and are in need of a few things. Any donation of toys that you can make would be great. We are looking for gently used toys of any kind (no weapons, please) that are not made of fabric (for sanitary reasons). We are particularly in need of a couple of kitchen sets or tool bench sets. Also on our list are kid-sized pants hangers – those plastic ones you get from the stores when you purchase pants. All donations will be greatly appreciated. Please call the school office to make arrangements for pick-up or drop-off. Yes, we’ll come get it, if you’d like!

We are also looking for a volunteer to help us with an ongoing project this year. We are going to collect Community Coffee and Campbell Soup labels. We need an organizer! If you would be willing to help with this, please call the school office.

One more volunteer opportunity: storyteller in chapel. We have chapel twice a week during the regular school session and would enjoy having someone besides Ms Kim tell the story sometimes! It’s simple...the entire chapel time, including the pledge, announcements, a song or two, recognition of birthdays and the Bible story is only 15 minutes long. What a great witness...to share Jesus with these little children!

Wow, just a month before we are back to our Wednesday night suppers and Bible studies.

The Christian Academy for adults and children will begin on September 7th and offer three different classes this fall. Melissa Bowen will facilitate a 12-week “Marriage Enrichment” series and Pastor Chris will start a 6-week study on “John’s Letters to the Seven Churches in Chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation”.

Something new this fall—classes on nutrition and exercise. The classes will focus on our theme of “living a healthier lifestyle” by planning and cooking healthier meals and exercise programs geared to each person’s physical needs and abilities.

Organized Chaos

Nope, not talking about my desk, because right now there is no organization at all. I am talking about VBS, in fact I'm talking about the church. As I write this article, we are smack dab in the middle of our excellent VBS Program—Panda-mania. Thank you Jennifer Manuel, and all our many, many volunteers. But what you could observe from the outside, are these children being herded around the premises as they are guided from crafts to snacks, to video to story time to outside play time and around. If you didn't know better, or maybe if you knew all too well, it certainly looks like organized chaos. But why not, because I suspect that is often what church looks like, too.

During one of my recent sermons, I shared from a book entitled “Going Home” by Robert Raines, about the nature of the authentic church. “It's not a neat, tidy, sober congregation, seated heatedly side by side all facing forward, but the church is a milling around, shoving, laughing, loving crowd- a combination of Moses and the whining mob- all making our way through the wilderness, but all headed toward the promised land.” Amen, brother Amen! Organized chaos!

Here at Covenant, we can observe some folks headed toward worship, some headed toward Sunday School, some toward service in the music, children, youth, and other service areas, some gearing up for Pumpkin Patch, others coming to exercise or weight loss programs, while others come to fellowship. Some of us are confident, others of us are doubtful. Some of us are wandering, others of us are wondering. But, together we are all headed in the direction of the promised land.

My function as your pastor is to help you along the journey. I can't make you nor would I want to. All I ask is that you ask the Lord where and what you should be doing for His Kingdom. We have lots of opportunities for you to jump right in as a disciple of Jesus Christ. I love worship, but you miss so much of the riches of the church, if that is all you do. Some of you who get this newsletter, need to evaluate if you are even doing that enough to reflect your Love of God.

We are on the move here at Covenant. It is my prayer, soon, and very soon, we will be unveiling the details of our building program here and asking people to step up and help us make that dream come true. We will be adding opportunities for you to learn God's Word, to hear about God's desire for improving our marriage relationships, hearing about our need to put our financial house in order as a spiritual act of worship, and we will be adding opportunities for our church family to get healthier so we might better serve the Lord. You don't need to do them all, but surely you can find something to jump right in and add to our organized chaos around here.

A New Goal for the Fall

The Summer seemed so short this year. But the heat is still not done with us yet.

I know most of us still have a lot to accomplish before the Labor Day weekend (the actual end of summer). Especially those who are going back to school or getting those ready and back in school. But once all of that is done and schedules are calmed down, I'd like for those of you who have been resisting, to consider joining the Chancel Choir or Handbell Choir. These crucial ministries require minimal time obligation and are rich in fellowship and Godly rewards. One does not have to be a musical savant to be in either group but just have a love for praising God.

Scripture calls ALL of us to be involved in ministry in the church. And these are two of the easiest. Call me during the day (981-2088) or email me at ken@covenantum.org with your questions or to set up a meeting.

We've room for you. You'll never know what God will enable you to do until you try.

Building the Master's Plan - Update

Brief update on where we are in the building program. We have been diligently working with the architect to make certain we have designed just the best building for us. It takes time, but we are so close!

We will soon begin our official capital campaign to raise funds and pledges over three years. We have been blessed with seed gifts that total almost $300,000. But that still leaves us a long way from being able to fund what we believe will be $1,300,000 project including renovating the existing sanctuary. That is a big project for us, but I know it’s right because it’s a GOD SIZED PROJECT, one we could not accomplish without God's direction and help.

Begin praying how you might be involved financially in Building the Master's Plan.

Children's Ministry Update

As I write this we have successfully completed the first day of VBS! There are pandas everywhere! The sanctuary and numerous classrooms have been converted to jungles. There’s some pretty funny movements going on and interesting critters roaming the halls. Many, many thanks to Jennifer Manual and the entire crew of volunteers. It takes a team to make VBS work and Covenant has the best ever!

Our children’s ministry is so very important to our church. We must remember that these children are the future of Covenant. Without them to carry on the cross and flame, we won’t remain in this place to be the family to the community that we are now. The church is growing and so is our children’s ministry. There are always places to help...in Sunday School and in Children’s Worship. Won’t you prayerfully consider making an impact on these children? We’re gearing up for fall...watch for some great fun!

Remember When

Remember When our grass was brown and we were praying for rain? It Worked!

Seems as if not a day goes by that we don't see some rain - now its hard to get out to mow our yards because it is so wet. Are we ever satisfied?.

Don't forget tomorrow is Sunday, a fifth Sunday, but we are not going to eat together after church. We had a great celebration on July 3rd, so we will await the next Fifth Sunday to eat together. But we will gather around the LORD'S TABLE for Holy communion tomorrow. Always a special time for the church family. We are going to sing and sing some more. Some of the old standbys and some of the newer old standbys.

My message is on Old Wine - New Wineskins in Luke 5:36-39

Don't forget you have the opportunity to bring a few staple food items for the UCO Food pantry, I CAN food offering, and we are also collecting blue jeans for a family that lost their house to fire (36 waist 30 inseams and 34 waist and 30 inseams) and, Paul says we need to be content in the rainy season or in the dry season but I bet our farmers are happier with our rain now.

Special Thanks to EVERYONE who helped make this years Vacation Bible School such a success! Everyone had such a great time and we are proud to have the best Volunteers in the world!!

The kids collected 236.6 lbs of pennies and other change! We don't have an exact count, but we estimate it should total over $500. And if that wasn't great enough, we have a secret benefactor that is going to match the total! All proceeds are going to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Homes.

Join us Sunday morning for a musical encore during the Children's Message time at both 9:00am and 11:00am services!

VBS is almost over, and it is going great. All the volunteers - Amazing! Jennifer Manuel - superb! Tomorrow is the last day, and sometime around 11:30am the loser of me or Jennifer Manuel will gladly receive a pie in the eye. Big contest going on, boys vs. girls, as to whom could bring the most pennies to fill jugs. All the benefits going to the Methodist Children's homes. Right now it doesn't look good for the preacher. Oh well,I can take one for the team.

He is going to challenge us in the church to be out front in helping us face the nation's economic and other issues from a spiritual perspective. This Sunday
Finally, even after a long week at VBS, we will have worship services on Sunday. A baptism at 9:00am, Rev. Ed Boyd visiting and helping. I will be preaching from Matthew 13 - the parable of mustard seed and leaven.

And big treat - we will hear from our VBS - some great singing. You won't want to miss church this Sunday. In fact, I wouldn't know when you would ever want to miss church.

One other note: received information for all you school uniform shoppers. Big time sale at the Heymann Center Thursday-Saturday, where school uniforms were advertised cheap! Shirts - $4.50, shorts - $7.00, pants - $7.50. Sounds pretty good to me.

Covenant Getting Fit
We will have our first meeting of all parties that are interested in helping plan ways our Church family can get fit. We will meet immediately after the Summer Solace Service. A short meeting to talk about what we are doing, what we might do, and who might help us do it. I am so excited that so many of us are determined to do the best we can to feel the best we can so we can serve God the best we can for as long as we can. Everyone is invited to eat, worship, and to plan.

Sunday we will have church
We are planning on having two great worship events where we learn from God's Word,where we fellowship with the Holy Spirit and our church family, where we worship the Lord with our hymns of praise and worship, and where we get marching directions on how to live out our faith.

This month's Men's Breakfast has ben cancelled. We will pick back up in August.

One more important announcement - one of our church family needs a ride to Shreveport for an important doctor's appointment on Friday July 29th. Should you be able to do so, please email me back.

What a Great Weekend

If you missed Sunday morning or Sunday evening here at Covenant, you missed a great blessing. Our morning services were great, the choir did an outstanding job with the choir special. We sang the patriotic songs with gusto. Brother Byron presented a great sermon and we gathered for a holy moment for Communion. And while our 9:00am service was missing a few, we still had a respectable crowd. Our Redeemed at 11:00am also lead us into a worshipful attitude.

But Sunday evening, we had a great day, fun jumps and water slides were packed with our young ones, and we served hundreds for the meal. A great big thanks for our special cooks - Ann & Stan, Mike & Jeaneen, Alan & Vickie, and all the other members who pitched in to help! We could not have done it without them.

To Top it all off, The Sister's treated us to a great evening performance, truly Spirit filled.

Don't Forget - Thursday morning at 8:30am is our Men's Bull Session - coffee, food, great fellowship, and solutions for the world.

Sunday - July 10th - in spite of having such a great July 3rd weekend, we will still have church this coming Sunday. In preparation, read Matthew 13:1-9.

Covenant Independence Day Celebration

Just a quick reminder about the festivities this Sunday that you're not going to want to miss.

Sunday Morning

Make sure you wear Red, White and Blue to worship. We will be celebrating Holy Communion at both services.
It's also our monthly I-Can Sunday. Please bring your canned food offering and we'll make certain it gets to United Christian Outreach for distribution to those in need.
And if that's not enough, Brother Byron will be sharing the Word of God through the sermon.

Sunday Afternoon

Beginning at 3:00pm we will begin with FunJumps for the kids and other activities. Come, relax and fellowship.
Then around 4:00pm we will be serving a virtual plethora of July 4th style foods with all the fixins'. We'll be serving hot dogs and three, count them, three different style hamburgers: beef, turkey & veggie.

Sunday Evening

And last but not least, at 6:00pm in our Sanctuary, a special concert by SISTERS. 2011 SGN Music Award winners for Female Group of the Year and Gammy nominees, SISTERS will bring us their special witness and share the Love of God in harmony and witness. A love offering will be collected.

I have received several e-mails that were inspired by Pastor Chris’ message on June 12th about living a healthier life style. When Chris first told me about what God had laid on his heart for the body (no pun intended) at Covenant, I was inspired as well.

After by-pass surgery and having type 2 diabetes, you would think I would get the picture. But, two and half years after the surgery, I am heavier now than before the by-pass. Martha, Hazel, Myra and others have urged me to drop the pounds, but I would always respond “I know, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Sunday, turning in the commitment card along with 120 others, I felt a peace knowing that this is not something to dread, but something to live for. Live for a healthier spirit, healthier soul and a healthier body. Pray for me as I pray for you that we CAN, with God’s help, turn our bodies into a “temple” pleasing to Him.

Children's Ministry Update

What an awesome display of the Holy Spirit the children have provided! If you've not seen the banners hanging in the Sanctuary, please be sure you take a look. Our children's Sunday school classes did a fabulous job with Pastor Chris' request to create Pentecost Day banners. Many thanks to the teachers who put everything together.

Just a reminder to all the parents of our children: Sunday school is in full swing for the summer! Don't neglect bringing your children so that they may continue to learn more about God's love. VBS is just around the corner. Be sure to register in advance. You may bring your registration to the church office or hand it to Jennifer Manual or me at church. Hope to see you there!

Help Wanted at Covenant Preschool and Mother's Day Out

Kim Havard, our Preschool Director is seeking people for three positions in our Church Preschool and Mother's Day Out Program. We need people for our fall semester beginning in August. Read on, if you or someone you know may be looking for an opportunity.

All three positions are for a 5-day a week position in Covenant Preschool. One is for a position in our three year old classroom and the other two are for our toddlers and young two's. If you have experience or have a real heart for children and are interested, please call Kim Havard at the church - 988-3962 and arrange an appointment with her.

Fishing - Life or Death Matter

Upon returning from Annual Conference, you would hope I would have gleaned something worth sharing with my church family after four days; four wonderful, long, often boring days sitting and conferencing. We did have an excellent Bible teacher from Coral Gable Florida that convicted me. Jorge Acevedo was assigned to a dying United Methodist Church about thirteen years ago, and they now worship over 2600 people per week, and have spread to three campuses. You can imagine I listened intently to the how and why of that type of growth.

Us preacher types are always searching for the latest program or latest gimmick that will help our congregation have such tremendous growth. Is it the style of music? Is it the style of preaching? Is it the time of the services? Cer- tainly all those factors make a difference, but he reminded us of an age old principle as old as Christianity. It is this: dying congregations have forgotten the command from Jesus to go fishing is a life or death matter. That's it...fishing, fishing for other followers!

Pretty simple, right? But it is true! This guest pastor shared what is apparent and scriptural but way too many of us ignore it. We don't act like fishing evangelists but more like church mice - not making much noise as we slip in and out of church, hoping we are unnoticed. Over 85% of mainline churches have quit fishing. Year after year, they are bringing no new followers into the Kingdom of God. We have begun to believe that making disciples is optional. In other words, our fishing has become recreational and not for a career.

Fishing is a life and death situation. If we depended on catching fish to eat, we could see how that would be life or death. Fishing for other followers by each of us believers is a life or death matter: Life or death to our local congregation, Life or death for our own particular denomination, Life or death for the individual Christian, and life or death for the unchurched unbelievers all around us.

Covenant is better than most, but we could be much better. Can you imagine what could happen to our own spirituality if we were committed to fishing for disciples? Can you imagine what could happen to our own local church, if we were committed to fishing for disciples? Can you imagine what could happen to the life of those we might encourage to come and try out Jesus? Time to go fishing!

One last thought! I recently introduced a new awareness of how our physical is connected to our spiritual, “The Body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit”. God has convicted me of our need to provide the best maintenance available for our Temple. Our chief aim as a follower is to Glorify God with all we do and all we are. Jesus died on the cross for us, and as the prophet Isaiah said: “by His stripes we are healed.” I believe our souls are healed for eternity, our spirits are healed from our anxiety, and our body is healed for kingdom living today. I ask you to pray how you might demonstrate your willingness to become healthier in all aspects of our life and then our willingness to go fishing for other disciples.

Preschool Update

We are nearing the middle of our summer session and it has been a great one! We are learning about different animals and there's been lots of barking, mooing and oinking going on. Bella the Pig visited us and we are looking forward to more animal fun.

Our Mother's Day Out is completely full for the fall with a waiting list (God is so good!). There are still a few openings in the three and four year old preschool programs. If you or someone your know is interested in registering, please have them call (988-3962) as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for the donations to the school via the garage sale. The books have been distributed through the classrooms and the children are loving them!

As I reported last month, not much is going on the music front during the hot, humid days of Summer. But believe it or not, we are starting to plan music for Christmas.

But I've been working with Gretchen in preparation for their upcoming Trivia Night that you can read more about in this blog entry. I have a few left over music questions I thought I might throw your way. Take a look and see what you may know.

Have you all been brushing up on your useless knowledge? ‘Cause you’ll need all you can get for our Trivia Night on July 8th. We’ve been digging and researching and watching a lot of Jeopardy to get our questions prepared.

So get a team together - 6 to 8 people. Make sure you choose your team wisely. You’ll want some brainpower because you’ll be working together to answer 6 rounds of questions. Don’t forget to name your team. Be creative.

But to get everyone energized and the brain juices flowing, we’ll have a great dinner of Chicken Spaghetti, salad and garlic bread and for dessert, bread pudding.

All through the evening we’ll have our silent auction items on display. We’ve been able to procure quite a plethora of eclectic items. So get your tickets now. $25/person (make checks payable to Covenant).

Let's not forget, even though it is summer, we still have some activities during the week.

Wednesday
8:00am - Pilates exercise group
5:15pm - Light meal of chicken, salad, veggies, desert, and bread: chicken nuggets and fries for the kids
6:15-ish - Gather in the Sanctuary for a time of singing, prayers, Holy Communion and devotion - Food for the Body, Soul, and Spirit

Saturday
8:00am - Men's breakfast. Time of fellowship and food. Stay tuned for list of projects we may try to accomplish but trust me it will not take too long

Sunday
This coming Sunday is Father's Day. Why not Worship our Heavenly Father by being in Church. Gifts for all our men who come to worship

We continue focusing on the Apostle's Creed, I believe in the Holy catholic church. Don't you want to know what all that means, and why don't we say; I believe in the United Methodist Church?

Last but not least, I have had several comments about last Sunday's message, and how our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit - and how we are to Glorify God in All we do. Over 120 personal commitment cards were submitted to take this seriously. We will start planning on how this will live out here at Covenant by offering a comprehensive program for Offering Health for Body, Soul, and Spirit.

We're Back! And other news...

Byron, Margo and Jon Harkreader, Joyce Henson, and I are back from Annual Conference - our statewide Business Meeting. It's great seeing old friends, making new ones, and hearing how everyone is doing. We pay tribute to the Pastors and Spouses that have died this year, and welcomed new pastors into our Conference and sit and endure all the reports, but Praise Be To God, we are back home.

Don't forget, this Sunday, June 12th, is Pentecost Sunday, the Birth Day of the Church. Wear Red and be ready to celebrate and worship. Our focus in the Apostle's Creed sermon series is; I Believe in the Holy Spirit. Read 1st Corinthians 6:19-20 - The Body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. I will make an important announcement that can dramatically impact our body. I have several people to share a testimony of how the Power of God can work.

Don't Forget - Big Weekend

Dear Covenant Family -

Today is the Last Day to bring your treasures into the Crafter's Rummage Sale. The Sale starts Friday and Saturday and we could use all hands on deck to help on Thursday pricing Then selling and selling and greeting and hanging out on Friday and Saturday. Come help the group who has helped the church for years. Bring your stuff no later then Thursday at noon so it can be priced and ready to sale on Friday morning.

Sunday - I Can Food Offering, Holy Communion, and come hear about Jesus our Judge.

Also, if you have extra back packs, or received one for donating blood, bring them and allow us to use them next Thanksgiving for holding the items we give the homeless. Bring them Sunday.

Children's Ministry Update

We are winding down for the summer! Our big end of the school year bash was on Sunday, May 22. All children were invited to attend. Lots of fun and food...fun jumps, water and all that jazz! We certainly celebrated!!!!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 18-22. The theme this year Pandamania, so I think we might be invaded by pandas and the focus is on God's unconditional love. If you would like to volunteer, please call Jennifer Manual to see where your talents can be put to work.

Our mid-week and Sunday afternoon children's ministries will be on hold for the summer but we will continue to have Children's Worship and Sunday School. Have a great summer!

June Preschool Update

We finished up the year with fun jumps, snow cones, water days, popsicles and lots of tired little people. There are still a lot of teachers who are also tired.

We held two special ceremonies this spring: a spring program with 3 and 4 year old participating and we graduated 36 four year old and have sent them off to kindergarten. Both ceremonies went very well.

Our summer program is coming together well. We have several slots available, but are filling up fast! We have four new hires for this summer: Diana Seiler, Peggy Lewis, Renee Guillory, Tori Burger. Peggy and Renee will be with us for the fall as well.

Summer Music News

Summertime is here and in the music department that means shifting down a little bit.

Children's Music and Handbells will be taking the summer off, to return in full swing in September.

Chancel choir will take the month of July off following the first Sunday. You'll probably see a thinner Redeemed for the next several months.

Whereas the entire group will continue, from time to time members will be taking there personal and family vacations. You'll be hearing special music more often during these months, and that is always a blessing.

As for me, who knows? I'll be taking a little vacation time too. But if I plan it right, you won't even know I'm not here.

I hope that as you travel this summer you take the opportunity to find a church to worship where ever you are. Enjoy the music they have to offer. And if you think about it, bring me back a worship bulletin. I'm always curious to see what other churches and choirs are doing. Don't forget, The Sisters will be here July 3rd. We're going to have a great time that day with lots of food, music and who knows what else.

Summer is here and we are planning for our mid-month Summer Solace again. The dates are June 15th, July 13th and August 17th. Start thinking ahead for the fall Wednesday night studies. The big study we are planning is the Dave Ramsey “Financial Freedom” series that will begin on September 7th and continue through Advent.

We will have more info about cost and materials soon. Dave and Diane Redfearn, who have led this series in Texas, will be the facilitators. We will also offer Bible study for those not taking the “Financial Freedom” series on Wednesdays.
